Recently, Pātea Rugby Football Club celebrated its 150th Jubilee, bringing together players, supporters, families, and club legends from across generations.
More than 300 people attended the weekend celebrations, which included junior rugby, women’s rugby, Division 2 men’s rugby, old timers matches, a Jubilee dinner, and the opportunity to reconnect with the people who have shaped the club’s proud history.
But alongside the celebrations, the club achieved something remarkable.
They turned their history into a fundraising opportunity.
Working alongside Pātea RFC, Kooga NZ helped recreate a heritage cotton knit rugby jersey inspired by the club’s original blue jersey from the 1920s.
The design was developed using historical research undertaken by a local historian who traced the origins of the club and its iconic colours.
The result was more than a jersey.
It was a piece of club history.
The heritage jersey was worn throughout the Jubilee weekend, creating a powerful connection between past and present generations of the club.
What made this initiative so successful wasn’t simply the jersey itself.
It was the story behind it.
The connection to the club’s heritage.
The memories it represented.
Supporters weren’t just buying apparel, they were investing in their club.
The response exceeded expectations, with 29 heritage jerseys sold at auction, helping raise an impressive $44,500 for the club.
Alongside the heritage jerseys, commemorative hoodies were also made available and proudly worn by members attending the Jubilee celebrations, further strengthening the sense of connection and community throughout the event.
